Design Lead

Certain Affinity, an independent AAA game developer in Austin, Texas, is looking for a talented, motivated, and experienced Design Lead with proven experience shipping major titles to help lead design efforts on one or more key projects. This is a high-level position, with an important leadership voice in setting company culture, as well as impact and influence on both current and future projects.

Qualified individuals are expected to be organized, with excellent communication skills and with a proven track record in AAA game design. The ideal candidate is a highly capable leader, an enthusiastic collaborator, and a creative designer and problem solver who is not afraid of big challenges.

Responsibilities

    • Manage the process of designing innovative, state-of-the-art games, with a focus on co-development for partners’ AAA franchises
    • Inspire, motivate, mentor and manage designers at all levels, promoting design skills and creative techniques, efficient processes, best practices, and effective communication and collaboration
    • Develop and maintain strong relationships with publishing and development partners and counterparts; represent company at recruiting and industry events
    • Work with QA to refine qualitative testing processes, and drive the inclusion of ad-hoc feedback, formal user testing, and data-driven metrics
    • Conversant with current industry knowledge of successful titles and genres, performance metrics, pricing strategies, marketing opportunities, and gameplay and monetization mechanics. Subject matter expert in these areas for the team
    • Maintain expertise on platform standards, requirements, and changes that may impact design
    • Be a key contributor to design proposals and review, evaluate, and provide input for game designs and design work submitted by external developers
    • Evaluate workflow and collaboration needs, and then oversee the development of design-specific game editors and tool sets, as the opportunity arises
    • Provide leadership and strategic vision to determine how the design department will increase its co-dev capabilities to support business demands and growth in a cost-effective, scalable manner

Requirements

    • 7+ years in a designer role, including design lead experience on multiple projects and across multiple platforms and genres
    • Minimum of 3 published titles, multiple of which are AAA console scope and quality; FPS game experience is a must
    • Passion for designing and playing games and a deep understanding of what makes them accessible, fun, and addictively replayable
    • Clear understanding and experience creating missions and environments, designing and implementing game systems, and leading combat and strategy mechanics, in-game interface design, and managing overall game balance
    • Interest in online social games and competitive games with a natural curiosity about monetization methods and marketing and promotional strategies
    • Exceptional leadership qualities and proven strong team and project management skills
    • Highly analytical self-starter with awesome work ethic, loads of initiative, strong prioritization and organizational skills, and amazing attention to detail
    • Strong understanding of all aspects of planning, producing, launching, and supporting games
    • Technical expertise with excellent grasp of a variety of content development tools and pipelines, including experience with top public and proprietary engines (e.g. Unreal, Unity, CryENGINE)
    • Proven ability to document and communicate design ideas to a diverse audience ranging from developers to publishers to press and fans
    • Strong ability to multitask, following through on a wide variety and number of tasks from inception to completion
    • Expert networker, well-connected in the industry and with extensive experience with recruiting and speaking at public events
